The 2012 California Pear Season is just a couple of months away. Early indications are that we have a full crop of Bartlett, Red, Bosc, and other varietal pears. Although we do not expect the ‘bumper’ crops we’ve experienced from time to time over the last few years, the crop should yield better size distribution and good promotable volumes for retail promotions from late July through October. Official industry estimates will be made public sometime mid-June.

Crop timing is slightly late, although not as far behind as last year’s record late start. Bartletts and Red Crimson pears should begin harvest in mid-July, will the first full week of shipments expected the week of July 16th. Bosc, Mountain Bartletts, and other varietal pears should come 2-3 weeks later. Barring any major weather events, crop quality should be outstanding.

We appreciate your support of Scully Packing Company and look forward to another great California Pear season.

Please contact Kyle, Tom, or Phil in the Finley Sales office at (707) 263-8500 or Stella Giese in Exeter at (559) 594-4626 for further information.

The California Pear Advisory Board has published its official volume and start date estimates for the 2011 California Pear Season. The Bartlett Pack is estimated at 3.2 million 36# Equivalent boxes, which is approximately 10% higher than the short crop from 2010, but still 8% below the previous four year average. Overall, just under 4.2 million Eq. boxes of all varieties of California pears are estimated for 2011, which means good opportunity for complete pear category promotion.

Bartlett harvest is expected to be even further delay due to concerns over fruit size. Estimated start dates for Bartlett harvest is now July 25th for the Sacramento Delta (River District) and August 15th for the Mountain District. Crimson pears will be available concurrent with Bartletts. Please remember to allow at least one extra day from the beginning of harvest to allow for packing and proper pre-cooling of Bartletts. Consolidation for loading in Exeter, CA, also requires an extra day. Promotional volumes of large size fruit will not be available for shipping until the first week of August.

Bosc and other varietal pears will start becoming available in mid-August. We will provide a full list of varietal start dates prior to Bartlett harvest.

Please call Kyle, Phil, or Tom in the Finley, CA, office at 707-263-8500, or Stella Giese at Scully Cold Storage in Exeter, CA, for more information.

The beginning of the 2011 California Pear harvest is a little over a month away. Cool, rainy weather during the spring has pushed back the start of the crop 10 days or so from normal on all districts and varieties. This is consistent with other producing districts of summer and fall fruits from the West Coast. Recent warm weather is expected to continue and should help finish the crop off nicely in terms of fruit finish and sizing.

Sacramento District Bartlett and Crimson pears will be available sometime during the week of July 18th, with promotional volumes coming the following week. Mountain Bartletts will begin the week of August 8th. A good crop of Bosc and other varietal pears is also expected. The first Bosc should be available from California in early August. We will provide a full list of varietals and start dates just prior to the start of the July harvest.

Scully Packing Company is expecting to pack and market 15% higher volume of California Pears over last year’s short crop. We expect that this will be consistent with the total fresh crop estimate in California, which will be announced June 23rd.

On the sales desk again this year will be Kyle Persky, Phil Scully, and Tom Frawley in our Finley, CA, office, and Stella Giese in our Exeter, CA, cold storage facility.
