The 2014 California pear harvest is just under a month away and The California Pear Advisory Board has published its official crop estimates. The Bartlett Pack is estimated at 2.6 million 36# equivalent boxes, down 12% from the 2013 crop of 3 million and 5% from the 2012 crop of 2.75 million 36# equivalent boxes. A normal size distribution is expected and crop quality is expected to be outstanding.

California Bosc volume is expected to be reduced by over 50%, with a total estimate of 260,000 36# Equivalent boxes, due to a significant removal of acreage and generally shorter crop on remaining acreage. Most of the reduction in Bosc supply will be from orchards harvested in July and August. Late Bosc orchards, harvested at the beginning of September, are expected to yield good supplies. Overall, over 3.1 million 36# equivalent boxes of all varieties of California pears are projected to be packed for the fresh market, allowing ample opportunity for pear category promotion from July through October.

Market conditions are expected to be very strong for California pears throughout the season, due to a strong market for processed pears and lack of supply of competing fruits. Northwest and import pear supplies are dwindling and what remains is selling at high prices. Scully Packing Company again plans to pack and market just under one million boxes of pears this season, with the bulk of our production coming from the renowned Mountain growing region.

Official start date for Sacramento River Bartlett and Red Crimson pear harvest is July 7th. Light shipments will begin midweek and increase by the weekend. Please remember to allow at least one extra day for consolidation in Exeter, CA. Official start dates for Lake and Mendocino Counties indicate Mountain Bartletts will be available for shipping in volume early August. Bosc and other varietal pears will start becoming available in late July, with peak production varying by district.
